Looking for expert advice on grooming your Australian Labradoodle? Our Australian Labradoodle Grooming Guide covers everything you need to know to keep your dog’s coat healthy and mat-free. From choosing an experienced groomer to brushing techniques, bathing tips, and the best tools for the job, our guide provides practical advice to help you maintain your ALD's beautiful coat.
Choosing a Groomer
Choose a groomer who is experienced with the labradoodle cut and treats dogs with care and love.
Begin touching around the puppy’s face, feet and ears at an early age so he gets used to the grooming process.
Brushing
Brushing two to three times a week will help keep your labradoodle’s coat mat free and flowing.
Full grooming is about every four to eight weeks to 8 weeks, depending on coat length and brushing.
Coat should be dry before brushing.
Use a slicker brush, starting from the skin. Brush outward in layers.
Mats
Cut through mats with thinning shears.
Use a de-matting tool to untangle.
Be careful not to pull the skin. Use a brush and metal comb to gently work free mats.
Bathing
Bathing should not be more than once a month as it can strip oils from the skin. If your ALD is dirty, you can bathe them.
Use a natural, gentle dog shampoo/conditioner that rinses out thoroughly.
Brush before baths to avoid mats.
Drying
Towel dry, then use a blow dryer.
Brush coat when dry to nearly dry.
Trimming
Head
Scissors cut fringe, bangs and beard in the angles shown on the grooming card.
Scissors cut top of head.
Cut ears at the leather in a triangle from back of ear to jawline.
Eyes
Scissors cut the inside corner of the eyes in an inverted V pattern.
Trim around eyes so your dog can see.
Feet
Trim around their paws in a rounded shape.
Trim bottom of paw with an electric clipper.
Nails should be trimmed every four to six weeks. Cut above the quick.
Tail
Tail should be brushed, combed, and trimmed for a natural look.
Trim under tail to keep sanitized.
